When I had seen this, all I could think of was how
horrifying it would be to have the pile turn into a
'Glom while being under it.

Situation #1: Five days after being buried, Union
soldiers never found the nameless Reb, partially
because they never got the chance. When they came by
to start removing the mound of dead bodies it leapt up
killing the two present and fleeing into the
surrounding fields. The Reb is still alive at the
core, his soul and mind twisted into a despicable
corruption of its former self. The 'Glom will "plant"
itself near Yankee encampments and the living soldier
will yell out for help. When someone comes to his aid
the 'Glom devours them. It never attacks Confederates,
however the only new corpses it ever absorps into
itself are Confederate troops. The only way to kill it
is to remove the inexplicably surviving man from the
'Glom. If it is blown apart it slowly comes back
together, healing the nameless whacko at the core,
including bringing him back to life.

Situation #2: When he was finally uncovered and dead
several days later, the severely insane rebel came
back. So far the Manitou has had to do very little.
The man sees everyone as dead. Not only dead but
attempting to literally crush him with their own
weight. He "wakes up" in very busy places. Saloons,
bordellos, train stations, anywhere there are many
people gathered, and preferably to the manitou, with
their guards down. Well, not willing to let himself be
buried again, the reb fights them off tooth and nail.
After emptying his always freshly-loaded pistols,
he'll turn to his knife and whatever else is nearby.
After all the "corpses" have either fallen to the
ground or run away he heads for the hills. This is
where the Manitou takes over. It then hides until the
heat's died down and finds a new place to let its
human counter-part "wake up".
