Thier a series of books set in colonial america in 
which a race of supernatural beings who are ided as 
angels, devils, jinn and other names who wish to 
surpress technilogical advancement.

One of the ways that they do this is to appear before 
the once in a generation person who can advance 
science, in this case Sir isaac newton, and offer 
thier services to make things easy for them.

The ideal is why bother developing theorys and 
testing them when the spirits can make your devices 
work literlly like magic, and after a few generations 
of useing spirit run devices no one is left around 
who knows how to do things the old fashioned way.

Then the spirits leave, all the devices stop working,
and the civilization falls back into a dark age.

In the books the spirits had done this in the mystic 
age of india, the time of the 1001 arabian night 
stories and the height of the egyption empire.

The manitou's in DL do someting similar to the Mad 
scietists during the recongning and the MS are then 
forced to become the junkers.

But thier are a few MS who could realize that thier 
thoughts are inspired by spirits, most are just seen 
as another MS gone screaming and gibbering in smoke 
and sparks over the deep end, but a few may be 
belived, a few may gather togetther and try to save 
and research the real old time science. 

But that would ruin the recongners plans. And the 
recongners tend to send out big scaly firebreathing 
soul eating demons from the pits of hell after those 
who mess with thier plans.
