Britain should not be allied with France. Apart from
the Crimea France was seen as the most likely enemy
for Britain until the Entente Cordiale of 1904.

A disunited Germany is not a bad idea. Otherwise the
only way I could imagine the French winning is weird
science - maybe help from their new Union allies?

Strangely the gun thread is running parallel on the
Call of Cthulhu newsgroup.
