Some of you may recall a while back, I suggested the
possibility of having Sarah Winchester and her house
in Deadlands. For those of you that may be muttering
"Who the %#%^# is Sarah Winchester?", a brief
explanation.
Sarah Winchester was the wife of William Winchester,
the owner of the company that made Winchester
firearms. She was a fairly ordinary person, until her
husband and her only child died in less than a year.
As you can probably imagine, she became quite
depressed. Though she had had an interest in
spiritualism previously, it increased significantly
and she started regularly attending seances. At one
seance, she was told by the alledged ghost of her
husband that she was to go west and have a house built
for the ghosts of all the people that had been killed
with Winchester rifles. She did so, and eventually
arrived in the San Jose area of California, where the
spirits told her that was to be where the house was to
be built.
How many of you remember the appendix in the First
Edition Dungeon Master's Guide which had tables for
randomly generating dungeons? I suspect quite a few of
you used them. Possibly one or two of you even used
them on the fly. This would frequently result in
dungeons that would zigzag in all sorts of improbable
directions. As I understand it (as I've never visited
the place), the Winchester house seems to have been
designed using those tables. Hallways that would go
every which way, inexplicable dead ends, doors that
would open to a blank wall or possibly a sheer drop.
It was an unusual place.
As for fitting it into Deadlands, first the issue of
time should be addressed. In our timeline, Mrs.
Winchester arrived in California in 1884 (some sources
say 1886, but 1884 is the year given on the official
website). Since the child that died was said to be an
infant, and Mrs. Winchester was in about her
mid-forties in 1884, I think it's safe to assume that
the deaths occurred well before then. So I would
suggest maybe stepping it up to 1873 or 1874.
Originally, I thought of it being a regualar house,
but then read The Book of Curses and thought a
variation of the Living House would be a lot better.
More later. What do you think, sirs?

=====
I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is called a disgrace, that two are called a law firm, and that three or more become a Congress.
