 I'd say that "he just knows".  The closeness of the relationship causes a
 kind of psychic link or something - like the way people say some twins
 instinctively know when their twin is in danger.  No specifics, not because
 the can see it or anything, they Just Know.

 I'd say (again) that again he doesn't know specifics, but does wake up with
 a gut feeling that something terrible has happened, and maybe an idea of
 who's involved (including the fact that he is).
