Depends on the exact type of firearm. Any blackpowder type will be rendered
inoperable almost instantly. They can resist a light rain if kept covered
but mud or immersion will disable them. Any cartridge type weapon can handle
rain pretty well, but unlike modern rounds they are still not sealed against
water so immersion will more than likely shut them down.
  My group, all being firearms enthusiasts any way came up with the idea to
paint their rounds with a thin coat of wax to make them much more
waterproof.
