Death happens.
I was always bored in D$D when I knew a GM wouldn't kill a character. I
just lost a character in a PBEM, and it was a very good death-scene.
Part of the fun of combat is when you almost die, but by luck or skill or
whatever you make it. As a player, those were always the most memorable
fights.
