Well, there is also another way around the problem. I remember hearing
about "black Seminoles" in the movie "Lone Star." It was only a side note,
but the gist of it was that escaped slaves had joined with the Seminoles. I
don't know the timing but in theory a younger black character could have
been born into a Seminole tribe (or another tribe if you and your marshal
like) and thus be Indian rather than Gone Native. The character would
consider himself Seminole rather than black.
