I stand corrected. I also checked my copy of The Dunwich Horror as well
as Chaosium's Return to Dunwich and the spelling is, in fact,
"Whateley."

I remember seeing an original, limited printing of D&D's Dieties and
Demigods with the Cthulhu Mythos included. Seems that Lovecraft's estate
got a little irate at that because TSR pulled that chapter.
