Re: [DL] 1st edition hucksters & shaman compared to 2nd edition

I personally think the 2nd Ed changes went too far in the right
direction. It was nigh-impossible under the original rules to make a
good huckster that could still do anything else. Although, it was much
more CoC-ish, having the "dark sorcerer" start out extremely ineffective
in the supernatural area. My main problem was with the double jeopary of
it all; that you could succeed at a roll and still fail at the hand.
This wasn't necessarily fixed in Revised, except that your chances of
failing a roll are very low now.
My original fix made hucksters more powerful, but also increased the
chances of backlash a lot. You still bought each hex individually, and
you drew 4 cards, plus your level in the hex. Both Jokers were wild and
caused backlash. No rolls, since I thought they got in the way anyway.
Characters succeeded more often than not, but they really had to think
about whether they wanted to cast a hex. I think I also was doubly
sadistic and only reshuffled the huckster's deck after he drew a Joker,
as well.
