If you wanna see the standard issue backpack for civil war types... watch 
'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly".... when Tuco leaves the Union Prisoner 
camp, he goes to a train yard... just about every soldier in the scene is 
wearing one... they seem small, and almost wooden in appearance.

Backpacks from earlier are still appropriate in design... just not common.
