     Depending on the season.  In the summer a cowboy gets up a little befor 
sunrise but in the winter it is a little bit later


what does he do?
    That again all depends on the season. Early spring is calving time so 
the cowboys are checking and doctoring, late spring is branding time, this 
is a lot of fun because it is a big drunken party.  During the summer the 
hay has to be put up and the cattle taken to the summer range.  During the 
fall the cows are gathered and taken to the winter range.

when and where does he eat,
      That all depends on how much work has to be done but most outfits have 
a cook

      Damn little, if you are lucky and the outfit is close to town you 
might get one afternoon off a week but in the old days one afternoon a month 
was a little closer to reality

What's the pay like and how often is it given?
       Good wages today for a good hand is $1500 a month and found, but in 
1876 is was about 30-45 bucks a month but they were only paid every couple 
of months
