Hi,
Some thoughts on killing PC's.
Hit them when their
pants are down. The human psyche tends to build to climax
then relaxes its vigilance. In the movie "Lightning Jack", the
protaganists manage to pull off a bank robbery by informing the town that
another group of bandits are after the bank. After the townspeople gun
down the other gang, and while they pose for photographs, the protaganists
quietly hold up the bank and make off with the money.
One way of applying this to a posse is
after you finish the "regular adventure"
and they all repair to the saloon to tend to their wounds with their guard down,
have the saloon gals quietly pull out shotguns and start blazing away. Or
put arsenic in their whiskey, ground glass in their mashed potatoes and
nitroglycerin in their cigars. In short, be really nasty. If
the players start getting irritated, explain how they are acting in revenge on
behalf of person X whom they managed to irritate. (There's bound to be one in
the posse's history.)
Another related possibility is to
hit them several times in one session. I've noticed that our posse usually
gets through its first fight of a session without too much trouble, then gets
hammered in the second one. Why? Because we've already spent
slightly too many chips avoiding damage and have yet to regain any. If you
hit them at beginning with a decent threat, they will promptly unlimber their
guns and blaze away, using chips to absorb the damage. Hit them again
later in session with a similar sized threat, they will have a hard time finding
the chips. Hit at the end of the session with a third and possibly lesser
threat, they will be toast.
If that fails, hang the bugger.
