RE: [DL] McGlothlin's War of Northern Aggression:-) Book Club
Colonel McGlothlin,
Your dispatch comes at a most fortuitous time as I am now researching just
these very subjects. Only if such intelligence came wrapped around a brace
of cigars would your information be more welcome, sir. All kidding aside
thank you much for the tip re: "Everyday Life" you've saved me much
research!!
In a similar vein, Borders Books is offering two three-volume sets that may
be of interest. Since Borders operates by corporate decree (so a friend on
the inside tells me) you'll find them in the remainder piles in front of the
registers at a Borders near you. One is on the "Wild West" the other is "The
Civil War." These are essentially reprints of other books but at $19.99 each
a pretty good value.
The Civil War set includes:
"Commanders of the Civil War"
"Battlefields of the Civil War"
"Fighting Men of the Civil War"
All by William C. Davis (no relation)
The Wild West set is:
"Age of the Gunfighter"
"Native Americans"
"American Frontier"
by various authors.
I bring these up because for the price these books provide TONS of
photographs of period and reconstructed objects, vehicles and structures
that I've found very helpful in my scenario design.
Your obt. servt.

Subject: [DL] McGlothlin's War of Northern Aggression:-) Book Club
Hi all,
I just picked up three new books on The War which--dollar for dollar--are
among the most valuable I've ever acquired. Since all of them would make
great references for Marshals, I thought I'd pass along the relevant info
for anyone who might be interested.
First, there's *Everyday Life During the Civil War*, by Michael J. Varola
(Writer's Digest Books, ISBN 0-89879-922-8; see www.writersdigest.com ).
It's a well-written, detailed guide to what people on both sides read, ate,
sang, believed--you name it. The reader learns about slang, popular songs
and other things that would add color to a *DL* game (especially a Back
East campaign), as well as some practical stuff like a price list of
everyday items. At US$16.99, it's a great addition to any historical
library.
Secondly, there's *Officers and Soldiers of the American Civil War*
Volumes I and II, by Andre Jouineau and Jean-Marie Mongin (Historie &
Collections, ISBN 2 908 182 858 and 2 913 903 002). Two utterly gorgeous,
completely full-color books depicting ranks, uniforms, flags, weapons,
organization and tactics. These are now the pride of my extensive book
collection, and I can't say enough good things about them. They're French
imports and a bit pricey as a result (US$20 each), but if you're interested
in The War or ever use the military in your *DL* games, you just can't beat
these tomes. (Volume I is all about the Infantry, while Volume II covers
Cavalry and all the other branches).
Hope these will be of use.
Deo Vindice,
Christopher McGlothlin, M.Ed.
