Another version of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is "Johnny
I Hardly Knew You." While "Johnny I Hardly Knew You" is distinctly
Irish in flavor, there is some confusion regarding whether the first
inspired the second or vice versa. Therefore, I don't know if "Johnny
I Hardly Knew You" is period for the Civil War. The lyrics are truly disturbing,
but I don't think they'd be sung at a funeral. Especially intense
is Cahir O'Dougherty's version, accompanied only by the bodhran.

Again, not exactly a Civil War song, but along the same lines in
theme and mood. And with the bodhran, it's a song that's hard to
forget once you've heard it.
