[DL] D20 Deadlands

Here is a note from Shane Hensley that was posted a while back. Maybe it will
help some of you understand what the goal of D20 Deadlands was. Note: This

Hi Friends and Fans,

As you can see from our poll, we're considering doing a D20 version of
Deadlands for those players out there who haven't yet joined in on our Weird
Western fun. No, that doesn't mean we're changing our system, and no, we're
not being bought by Wizards of the Coast. We're just putting out a book for
those TSR fans who'd like to see what we're all about.

Now, for those of you who are anti-WOTC, I'm going to go out on a limb here
and defend them a bit. Any company gets bashed as soon as they become large
and profitable. I know that one day we'll stop being the underdogs and the
bashing will begin as well. Free country, say what you want. But, having
worked with TSR in the old days, and knowing personally the people who work
there now, the instant condemnation of their products is unfair, uncalled for,
and even shameful. You won't find a better bunch of people, and yes, they are
gamers just like the rest of us.

Personally, the attacks on WOTC on our poll makes me rethink what a great
bunch of people gamers--and our fans specifically--usually are.

As for 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons (R), saying it's anything but a well
thought out, beautiful, effort of love is ridiculous. That's like hating
Britney Spears or the Spice Girls because they're successful. Sure, they're
not my bag either, but don't hate something because it's popular. Give them
credit, give them an honest appraisal, and if it's not for you, move on and
let everyone who is a fan enjoy them without trying to make them feel bad.
That's my freedom of speech coming through, partners. I don't drag the soapbox
out on our website often, but I felt it was called for.

One last note. We ARE doing a Deadlands D20 conversion book, and John Goff is
writing it. The current plan--and this may change--is to do a hardback,
full-color book using the Doomtown art, for about $25. It will restate what's
going on in Deadlands and then explain how to play in the Weird West using the
D20 rules. If you don't want it, don't buy it. No one's got a six-gun to your
head. From our saddle though, we're thinking nearly half a million folks just
bought D&D 3rd Edition (R), and we'd like to see a few of those folks come
ride in our stable.
