I dunno, maybe it has something to do with the fact that
THE WHOLE FREAKING HOBBY WAS INVENTED DUE TO THIS GAME...
Countless gamers cut their teeth on the game...
I wouldn't call it devotion, more like common ground...

Sure it is a dated system (haven't seen D3, so I don't know
how different it is now)
Yes, after a while it sucks...
Yes, it takes a really good DM and good players to prevent
it from being a hack-fest, but it has the largest following
of any RPG, EVER...

They probably sold more copies of the game in the first day
of GenCon, then most companies sell in an entire year!
 
Personally, I have played in years, but would probably play
it again given the chance...
