Oh yeah - usually 100 to 1. :-)
No self-respecting patriot would even accept the other sides money. But
this is also when banks often printed their own currency - which would have
less of a loyalist impact.

Usually depends on how close to the East you were.
To keep things "simple" for my game - Back East in the South you couldn't
spend Union money, and vice versa in the North. Gold would spend just
fine. (with notable exceptions - say if you were near a smuggling town)_
In Rebel controlled places out west, Union greenback would go for 50% of
Confederate value and vice-versa. Gold would spend normally.
In California - all currency would spend for 50-75%, with gold being normal.
If I felt like messing with the players, I would state how a "recent Union
victory" has inflated confidence in their currency - giving that one more
value (with a corresponding drop in Confederate values- this notably
happened during those times when the players had a lot of Confederate
money. :-)
