Here is my take haveing run serveral MS through campaigns and played one
myself.
For an alchemist, definetly. You can't brew anything but tap water without
the philosipher stone. You could do some neat things with just chemistry
but for the really neat ability enhanceing stuff you have to use blood and
ghost rock.
For a regular MS: No. Real science is full of neat things that you can do.
The use of ghost rock is for things that would normally be outside of the
realm of possiblity. Like time travel, reviveing the dead, or the use of
mind control.
If you can use a vaild science rule for a device then by all means do it.
The mad scientist table alllows for appleations of currently known laws and
technology. If you might be a bit ahead of the learning curve then you can
do that too it's all in there. But for most mad science stuff you will need
some form of "New science"...If you want to build a gun that shoots liquid
nitrogen (A strech I know but hear me out) you might need to use ghost steel
or some form of new tubeing laced with ghost rock.
That's just my take. If the big guys want to make me look stupid that's
their decision.
