Jason,

Could you give us a little more info on the Mad Scientist in question?  What
is his particular specialty?  It will make it better to tailor the cursed
relic.  For example, if he were into biology/anatomy a la Gash, he could
have Victor Frankenstein's notes.  Lost Notebooks of old, pre-closing of the
gate to the Hunting Grounds (in the Dark Ages) have a lot of potential as
well.  If you want to get really creative, he could have something from a
pre-Columbian civilization with hints of advanced technology or theories
(how the Nazca Lines were developed and the like) but a specialty would help
a lot.
