You get to roll the reliability and malfunction dice for the shotgun in
secret - he will suffer from a few jammed moments, but when he gets a
catastrophic failure, don't tell him that his shotgun has exploded.  Instead
get him to roll the hit location and damage dice still thinking that he has
hit his target.  Then sit back calmly and tell him that his shotgun has
blown up in his face and to apply the damage to himself.

Just wait until he munchkins himself a gattling shotgun!!!
