There is an easy way to motivate people. Have the Ennemy 5 turn up with some
help just when the posse is about to split. Then, those who are not involved are
shot first. They will probably be quite angry after this guy. And this gives
them all a reason to work together.
Make the tracking of this other guy really long, and in the end, they should not
consider to split. They might even become friends, then.
You might consider a gunfight is not a good idea. What about putting them in a
train, and have the bridge explode, dynamited by the ennemy? They survive by
chance, and when they try to investigate, find a clue that this enemy wanted to
kill one of the guys so badly he blew up the train. Revenge is a powerful
motivation.
