Seriously, this is something we've gone back and forth on more than a few
times around here, and we've never yet been able to come to any agreement. 
Ultimately, the best solution is to talk it out with your player.  Figure
out what you're comfortable with, what he's comfortable with, and run with
it.

That, unfortunately, my best suggestion.
