Final thoughts on the subject (for now):

Shooting *should* have an advantage over fighting in hand to hand.  There's
a reason that the vast majority of westerns portray gunslingers, rather
than brawlers.  That said, hand to hand has it's place: who, after all,
brings a gun to a bar room brawl (in a western, that is)?

If I were in a Western, I would carry a gun to kill a man, not a pointed
stick.
