Officially - not true.  The only "official" way to get above a 5 grit is if
you are a shaman using Ghost Dance and other shaman-like stuff.

Now - as a popular house rule - non-shaman can gain "colored" grit that
does not add to guts checks, but does count for coming back harrowed and
for keeping your guts checks up there in case you go bust.  (You lose the
colored grit first).
