To my knowledge, John Henry was a completely fictional character. I have a
book on American Folklore with an entry for him. I'll look it up tonight and
post my findings (as to when and who made it up).

BTW, I never call someone an idiot for asking a question. An idiot is
someone who has a question but doesn't ask, and proceeds anyway.
