Probably as long as the rope.  Less the size of the loop in the rope of course. ;-)

Seriously, give it a range of 2 (maybe 3 if you are generous.)  It certainly would be less aereodynamic than a throwing knife.  That way the chances of hitting anything with a 100 foot rope are pretty slim.
