I usually wait till they've killed half the party to tell them they've got a Relic..;)

Seriously, folks, I usually let the power manifest if they don't know how in a manner fitting to the trinket.  Or if all else fails, use the 'stress makes the world go round' rule work and let it snap off if they are about to be eaten by something..one of my players didn't realise he had a relic until a few months after he picked it up..;)
