Bathory was walled up in a tower of her own castle after her family and the
royal court got a little suspicious.  So long as she took her victims from
the local population, no one outside the area was the wiser.  It was when
she started a "school" for young noblewomen that the "authorities" figured
out what was up.  She was fed through a slot at the very bottom of the
wall -- enough food for her to live on.  I think they determined her death
by when the food stopped being taken in.

The actual time she lived after being condemned was four years, according to
my source.
