I have a theory about the alphas, but I'll put it after some spoiler space
on the end.

Part of the problem, from what I've gathered is that while AEG doesn't
want to produce teh game anymore they still own publishing rights to it.
So unless they release it Matt COULDN'T put out Crossroads on his own.

Given the info about angels and devils in bargainers what if the alphas
were taken away to fight in the "cosmic battle"? THey were deemed too
powerful for our dimesion and wisked off to another. The bomb just
provided the energy necessary to open the portal...
