Wild Cards was a series of (mostly) anthology novels compiled and supervised
by George R.R. Martin. Basically the stories dealt with what might happen if
an alien virus that shapes people to their subconscious was unleashed
worldwide back just after the end of World War II. A lot of folks exposed
simply died, many mutated into "Jokers", and a rare few became super-heroic
"Aces." The various books after the first were modern-day. The books roughly
go in "trilogies."

The Ace in question, Croyd the Sleeper (created by Roger Zelazny), gained a
form of the virus back in the 40's that caused him to go into comas
periodically and emerge with a new face and (typically) a new Ace power (and
also making him essentially ageless, and leaving him amphetamine addicted
due to a pathological fear of going back into a coma). In the...fifth book,
the power he gained was the ability to cause others to become infected (or
reinfected) with the virus, causing another "Wild Card" outbreak. He's been
pretty much the one constant character through the original series of books,
and the three-book Card Sharks series that came after.
