A Simple Rule our group developed for dealing with the problem of maintaining 
gadgets was that you only had to spen an hour maintaining for every day of 
use.  So say your character has the BFG1000 railgun and the Anti-Vampire 
Presurised holy water hose, If he takes his BFG1000 out and leaves the 
Anti-Vamp gun at home he only needs to spend an hour maintaining the BFG1000. 
 I personally dont think you should have to maintain a device your not useing.
